History of Our Kennebunk Inn
The former Greek Revival style home was first built by local farmer Asa English circa 1860. The English home was one of the very first homes in the area to incorporate indoor plumbing. As a testament to this, guests staying in the Sunrise room, the home’s original master bedroom, will note an arched doorway and a serpentine wall which were designed to call attention to this important feature.
The English family began a dairy business after the Civil War, keeping the cattle in the attached barn and renting rooms in the main house. Later, the barn became a carriage house, which was eventually divided into seven guest rooms. The hayloft inside the old barn became the second floor of the inn and the uppermost part was converted into a large suite which spans the entire third level and is now called the Carriage House Suite. The tack room, which had been added at the back of the carriage house to store the saddles and bridles and other equipment for the English family horses, is now a beautiful suite with a private entrance, a luxurious modern bathroom, and a bedroom surrounded by three walls of windows. Repurposed original pine floor boards can be found throughout the inn. In the 1950s, a small private cottage, now referred to as the Bungalow, was added in the rear meadow.
Each owner has left an impression on this storied Kennebunk, Maine inn throughout the years, working tirelessly to keep it looking pristine through the rugged Maine winters and salty mist of summer. In 2018, Elizabeth took ownership of the inn, and proudly continues the tradition of caring for this historic bed and breakfast.
